Ok so your probably asking two questions reading this post headline:
Q) How these things are connected to search?
Q) Haven’t I got anything better to do? (customers may say yes!)
Bear with me here……
For those of you who keep an eye on these things, you will be aware that there has been a battle going on between the X-Factor finalist (can’t recall his name) and Rage Against The Machine to see who gets the christmas no. 1. It seems that a facebook user got fed up with the thought of yet another pre-packaged, shrink wrapped X-factor No 1 at Christmas…..and decided to do something about it – launching a Facebook group dedicated to the cause.
Now being a Rage fan since they first hit the UK back in 1991, I was keen on this story and of course I wanted them to ‘win’. I actually went into HMV to buy the record (16 years after first buying it) but all I could find was wall to wall X-Factor merchandise. Nice try guys but you can’t swamp the internet so easily!
Anyway, Rage and the facebook group have beaten ‘the X-factor machine’ selling over 1/2 million copies along the way.
Ok so your still wondering the relevance to search. Well I decided to Google about the unfolding story and something caught my eye.
A while back Google & Twitter announced they had signed a deal to bring Tweets right into the search results. A similar deal was done with Microsoft. What does this mean? well its real evidence of integration between search and social media. In QDF searches, we can expect more of this and further expansion of regular search results.
By the way, this campaign has raised over £83,000 for Shelter – the band have donated the money and are also rumoured to be playing a free gig in the UK to celebrate. You might not like the song, but is their a worthier Christmas no 1 than this?
